When people think of protein they don't usually think of berries that look more like raisins when you receive them in the mail. Usually berries are plump, juicy, and full of life! Whereas these berries will always come to you in their dehydrated form for you to consume.

For preservation purposes they are freed from their water. If you decide to eat them as is they will be crunchy in your acai bowls or healthbars, albeit a little bitter in taste. However boiling them is recommended as they become naturally sweet when given H2O. And therefore can be added to the oatmeal of your choosing with the toppings you so desire.

Oatmeal never looked so good.

But why indulge in the precious goji and the dealings through your nearest market or Amazon? Well, because this study published in 2021 found an intake of goji berries prevented age-related macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration affects people over 50 with symptoms such as blurry vision, inability to recognize faces or fine print, inability to drive, worse color perception where colors appear dull, problems seeing in dim lighting, and blank spots in vision. Smoking, having high blood pressure or cholesterol, and eating lots of saturated fat can increase risks of developing macular degeneration. Over time the affected retina will result in these outcomes if preventions are not put in place and treatments are not considered.

One of these alternative preventative measures happens to include indulgence in the goji berry. In the 2021 study previously mentioned participants were asked to eat 28 grams of goji berry 5 times per week for the course of 90 days. Over the 90 days results showed success with an increase of macular pigment optical density in participants which countered risk of developing macular degeneration.

28 grams is about 3 TB of goji berry to add to your diet 5 times per week to create some fantastic oatmeal. Not only do goji berries prevent macular degeneration, they also contain 4 grams of protein, Vitamin A, calcium, iron, and potassium in 3 small tablespoons.

Besides porridge or oatmeal, there are other ways to consider the sweet goji after it has been rehydrated. This can include putting them in tea, chia seed puddings, or yogurts in order to get your daily consumption of eye improvement.

At least your chia seed puddings will now be healthy and Insta-worthy.

In a nutshell, or in this case a berry bush, goji berries have been around for millennia and are here to stay. The question only is if you will indulge in this berry and your improved health.
